Roxie Boyd

Roxie Boyd. "My wall hangings have been four years in
the making (or maybe more appropriately - a lifetime in the making). I
have about 35 pieces in the oriental style and several pieces that I
professionally mounted on wood. In August of 2006 I was invited to show
my wall hangings in the most unusual of places - a fabric store in
Chinatown in San Francisco. They were on display there for about a year
and then the owner, Sammy, closed down that store but has a fabric
store in Pinole in the East Bay.”
“I was born and raised in Nebraska but moved to San
Francisco in 1973 right out of high school to attend Fashion Design
School - which didn‘t work out, by the way. Though most of my real
world experience has been in an office setting I have always had a
creative streak and in the early '90s I took three years of art classes
at City College of San Francisco, had a Street Artist's license for a
while and sold decorative sweat shirts and decorative pins. Since 2001,
I have attended the School of Fabric Design in Berkeley, gave sewing
lessons at The Fabric Depo in Pinole, and started manufacturing my own
wall hangings under the name 'Fall To Earth Designs', all while working
a full time job. It is now time to pursue my dream of entrepreneurship
and to fulfill my destiny.”
“People often ask me why I chose the name Fall To
Earth Designs, I just thought it was a catchy name, Fall To Earth
Designs, nobody else was using it. Now I want to be TapestryBiz.com, no
one else was using that name either, and it is much more appropriate
for my business.”
The terms "Fiber Arts" and "Textile Arts" designate an enormous field that comprises and encompasses a large range of processes and techniques. It can be as fundamental as constructing the cloth, to weaving the threads, and can extend to its embellishment by means of dyeing, printing or embroidery. It is the amalgamation of all these techniques.
Roxie Boyd, the artist behind "Fall To Earth Designs" creates non-quilted fabric wall hangings. She uses commercially printed decorative fabrics in a tapestry context. Spontaneity is central to her creative process as she experiments with color and form and elaborates on the borders in each of her pieces to bring out particular colors from the central panel. Her specialty is in the particular way she manipulates unrelated prints and patterns and combines them to make up the whole. She loves the challenge of starting each new piece. Although the designs and colors may be more conducive to quilting, using multiple patterns and lyrical color mixes to define space and evoke movement, these Wall Hangings make for pleasant conversation.
Professionally hand crafted one-of-a kind Fabric Wall Hangings. You will find an overwhelming amount of Asian influence in these Wall Hangings made of decorative fabrics. “I have always admired how the Japanese combine pattern next to pattern next to pattern . . .” says Roxie Boyd, the Artist who conceived of these beautifully crafted wall hangings. “I made my first proto-type of this style of wall hanging over four years ago, but was never able to produce them on any kind of level until 2006. I take a panel of decorative fabric and match it up with an entirely different pattern that I use for the borders. Most of the creative process is spend in the pursuit of matching up fabrics."
These Wall Hangings are finished with a secondary backing bonded with fabric adhesive, and coated on both sides with ClearCote® or ScotchGard®. On the back are tapestry rod pockets at the top and bottom (for even hanging). These are sewn in to accept a rod or dowel. Wrinkles can be ironed out with dry iron set on silk setting. Press for 2 - 3 seconds. Do not iron metallic trims.
